The xx – I See You

Released: 13/01/2017 UK  |

The xx is one of these bands that has their visual identity sorted out. Just look at the covers of the band’s two previous albums “xx” and “Coexist”. If seeing these covers isn’t enough to wake your interest to check out the music, then I don’t know what is.
Anyway, The xx are back again with a brand new album called “I See You” and we’re gonna check it out. So what can we expect?

The funky opener “Dangerous” will drag you right into the vibe of the music and if you expect to hear more upbeat melodies like this on “I See You”… Well, The xx will surprise you on many occasions. Trust me. The single “Say Something Loving” will impress you with its catchy chorus and shoegazeish guitar elements, while “Lips” delivers something more electronic, topped with a melancholic mood.

A Violent Noise” is one of the tracks that won’t grow on you when you take the first listens to this record, but the more you listen to it, the better it seems to get. I really enjoyed this one in the end. The same thing can be said about the piece coming up next. At first you don’t really pay much attention to the minimalistic “Performance”, but later you actually start to care about the lyrics and then… Well, there it is. The highlight of “I See You”.

Replica” brings a couple of memorable moments with it, just as “Brave For You”. The first single taken from “I See You” goes under the name “On Hold” and I’ll admit that this one definitely made me curious and looking forward to this album. You’ll understand why. Just check it out. It’s probably the most “different” track here.
The next thing coming at you is “I Dare You” which is probably the only song on “I See You” that didn’t really convince me. “Test Me” delivers a quite unusual ending to this record, but… Let’s just leave it here. I don’t want to give it away to you!

I See You” isn’t necessarily a record for the average music-fan. There are many tracks you need to get into to fully enjoy the album as whole, but once you let it grow on you, it’s worth it. You can find more Electronic elements on “I See You”, but don’t expect to hear many hit-songs. Is that a bad thing? Not at all!
So keep your eyes open the next time you go to a record store! Maybe you’ll leave with the shiny new album by The xx.
